Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos

Prof. Miretta Flytzani-Stephanopoulos, our dear colleague, passed away in October 2019. Miretta battled multiple myeloma bravely. She was a wonderful and distinguished colleague who embodied creativity and kindness. We will all miss her.

Dr. Flytzani-Stephanopoulos joined the Chemical Engineering Faculty of Tufts University as the Raytheon Professor of Pollution Prevention in January 1994. Her previous work experience was with MIT's Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Her research uses heterogeneous catalysis principles to solve problems in the production of clean and sustainable energy. A focus of her work is the understanding of metal-metal and metal-oxide interaction at the atomic scale to guide the synthesis of new catalysts that maximize the yields of desired products, while using only trace amounts of expensive noble metals. At Tufts, she directs the Nanocatalysis and Energy Laboratory. Since 2002, she has served as Editor of Applied Catalysis B: Environmental. In 2009, she was named the inaugural Robert and Marcy Haber Endowed Professor in Energy Sustainability in the School of Engineering.
