Research Objectives

IMASC research integrates experiment and theory in order to achieve the five research objectives that together will provide key design principles for improving the selectivity of key catalytic processes. We are focusing on four important platform reactions in order to establish broad-ranging principles governing heterogeneous catalysis, particularly with respect to dilute binary metal alloys:

•Oxygen-assisted reactions of alcohols and amines, including cross coupling and dehydrogenation.

• Anhydrous aldehyde production from alcohols.

• Selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes and of unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols.

• Selective reductive coupling of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene.

These reactions were chosen because each has high potential for impact in the field of catalysis if design principles for high selectivity and activity are established.
